Class Description:

Analysis of the performance of algorithms; discussion of programming techniques and data structures used in the writing of effective algorithms.

Prerequisites:

CS 2121/3 Data Structures, CS 2231/3 Discrete Mathematical Structures, CS 3331/3 Mathematical Foundations

In particular, this class requires knowledge of the following material from CS 3331/3:

Since we are in a transitional phase between 2006-2008 and 2008-2010 catalogs, some students may not have taken CS 3331/3, or may want to take it in parallel with CS 3341/3. I will therefore very briefly summarize these topics in class. However, students are strongly advised to take CS3331/3 or "STA 3543 Statistics" or "MAT 2233 Linear Algebra" (in this order of preference) before taking "CS 3341/3 Analysis of Algorithms", as any lack of this required knowledge will put students at a disadvantage.

CS 2411/3 Systems Programming, CS 2211/3 Advanced Programming, and MAT 2213 Calculus III are not prerequisites for this class anymore (they used to be in the 2006-2008 catalog). There should not be any waivers necessary for these classes, but I will sign them if necessary.

Required textbook: Introduction to Algorithms, 3rd Edition; Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein; MIT Press.
(The older editions are very similar, however one or two chapters are missing, and chapter numbers and exercise numbers are switched around. If you opt to buy an older edition it is your responsibility to keep up with those differences.)
